# meta tag analyzer

> Extract and validate meta tags from any URL — title, description, Open Graph, Twitter Cards, and more.

Meta tags are the part of your page that most people see and never visit: the title and description in search results, and the card that appears when someone shares the link. Enter a URL above and the check reads the tags the page actually serves and shows how each one is likely to be used.

 ## Titles and descriptions are a click-rate lever, not a ranking trick
Ranking gets you shown. The title and description decide whether anyone clicks. A title that is a generic brand phrase, or truncated mid-word, or identical to forty other pages on the site, costs clicks at whatever position it holds — and a page with impressions and no clicks is a ranking you already earned and are not using. The pattern that works is specific: what the page is, for whom, with the outcome or a number in it, and the brand at the end where it can be cut without losing meaning.

 ## Length is about pixels, not characters
Search engines truncate on rendered width, not character count, so a title of capital letters is cut sooner than one of lowercase. Roughly sixty characters for a title and around a hundred and fifty-five for a description are safe working limits. Descriptions are not a ranking factor and are frequently rewritten from page content, but a good one still influences the click when it is used, and a missing one guarantees the engine writes something for you.

 ## Social cards fail differently
Open Graph and Twitter Card tags control how a link looks in a message, a post or a chat. When og:image is missing the platform picks whatever image it finds first, which is often a logo or an icon. When og:title is missing it falls back to the page title, which may be written for search rather than for a social feed. These failures are invisible on your own site and only appear at the moment someone shares you, which is the moment you least want a broken card.

 ## The checks worth repeating
Duplicate titles across a section usually mean a template is not inserting the page variable. A canonical or robots directive that contradicts what you expect will quietly change whether the page is eligible to be shown at all. Both of those appear here, because a perfect title on a page marked noindex does nothing.

## What this tool checks

- Title tag (length and content)
- Meta description (length and content)
- Open Graph tags (og:title, og:description, og:image)
- Twitter Card tags
- Canonical URL
- Robots meta tag

## Why it matters

Meta tags control how your pages appear in search results and social media shares. Missing or poorly written tags mean fewer clicks and lower rankings.

## How to fix what it finds

- Keep titles under 60 characters with your target keyword
- Write compelling meta descriptions under 160 characters
- Add Open Graph tags for rich social media previews
- Set canonical URLs to prevent duplicate content issues

## Methodology

We fetch the URL you enter with a crawler-like user agent, follow redirects, and parse the server-rendered HTML head. From it we extract the title element, the meta description, the canonical link, the robots meta directive, and the Open Graph and Twitter Card properties. Lengths are reported as character counts with an approximate rendered-width guide, because search engines truncate on width rather than count and an all-caps title is cut earlier than a lowercase one of the same length. Missing tags are distinguished from empty tags, since an empty description is a template bug and an absent one is usually a content gap. Where a page declares the same property more than once we report every occurrence rather than the first, because duplicates are the most common cause of a tag that looks correct in the source and behaves unexpectedly in results. JavaScript is not executed, so tags injected after load are not counted — which matches how they are treated when a page is crawled quickly.

## This tool also answers

### How do I check meta tags online?

Paste a URL above. The analyzer fetches the live HTML and extracts title, meta description, robots directives, canonical, viewport, OpenGraph and Twitter card tags, then flags anything missing, duplicated or over the length search engines will display.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long should a title tag be?

Around sixty characters is a safe working limit, but truncation is based on rendered width rather than character count. Put the distinctive words first and the brand last, so that if it is cut the meaning survives.

### Does the meta description affect rankings?

Not directly. It affects whether people click the result you already rank for, which is usually the more valuable lever. Search engines also rewrite descriptions often, most commonly when the one you wrote does not match the query.

### Why does Google show a different title than the one I wrote?

Rewrites happen when the title is too long, keyword-stuffed, identical across many pages, or a poor match for the query. A specific, readable, page-unique title is rewritten far less often.

### What size should the og:image be?

1200 by 630 pixels is the widely supported ratio. Smaller images may be cropped or ignored entirely, and a missing og:image means the platform chooses an image from the page for you — usually the wrong one.

### Do I need Twitter Card tags if I have Open Graph?

Usually not — most platforms fall back to Open Graph. Add Twitter-specific tags only when you want a different image or a different card type there than elsewhere.

### My tags look right in the browser but not in the checker.

Check whether they are injected by JavaScript. Tags added after load are unreliable for crawling and sharing; both work best when the tag is present in the server-rendered HTML.
